Bach - Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. Aria (3 minutes)

Goldberg Variations, BWV 988: Aria, a song by Johann Sebastian Bach, Glenn Gould on Spotify

Introspective

Just enjoy this technically brilliant ad exuberant performance by the great Glenn Gould.

The Goldberg Variations are written for the harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an opening aria and a set of 30 variations, concluded by a reprisal of the aria. First published in 1741, the work is one of the most important works of the variation form. They are named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may have been the first performer.

Until the beginning of 20th century, this work was not part of the standard keyboard repertoire. The first person who recorded the work was Wanda Landowska, a Polish-French harpsichordist. Her performance was highly rated. Then, Glenn Gould, a Canadian pianist well known for his outstanding technique and eccentric behavior, chose this work for his debut recording against the protests of the record company. The recording released in 1956 was a huge success. Gould would revisit this work just prior to his premature death in 1982, played at a much slower tempo which also was a best-selling record.

Introspective

I am grateful to live in the same time with this great cellist, Yo-Yo Ma! His playing is beautiful and conveys a profound spiritual depth.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed six works for the unaccompanied cello, They fell out of popularity for a long time until great cellist Pablo Casals re-discovered them. Since then they have become frequently performed by many cellists. These suites have also been arranged for other instruments such as the viola, guitar, saxophone, flute, and tuba.

Each suite consists of 6 pieces made up of a Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and a Menuetto (Suites No.3 and 4 replace the Menuetto with a Bourree, No.5 and 6 have a Gavotte). and Gigue, all wrriten under one tone.

Bach - Partita No.3 in E Major BWV 1006: III. Govatte en rondeau (3 minutes)

Violin Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006: III. Gavotte en rondeau, a song by Johann Sebastian Bach, Hilary Hahn on Spotify

Dignified and Elegant

This tune instantly takes you to the 17th century and evokes images of the life of aristocrats during those days.

This is the last of the Six Sonatas and Partitas, considered one of the masterpieces for the solo violin. What is a Partita? It originally referred to music for a single-instrumental in 16th and 17th centuries, and subsequently evolved into more of a dance music by composers such as Johann Kuhnau and Bach.
